Fur is suggested with a few tufts rather than drawn hair by hair, so the shapes stay open enough for crayons. Stripes and spots are left off most of the cats on purpose; a child can add a tabby pattern or leave the coat plain.

How to print these pages

  1. Pick the paper size that matches what is in your printer: US Letter or A4.
  2. Open the PDF and choose Print. Set scale to 100 percent or “actual size” (not “fit to page”).
  3. Plain copy paper works for crayons and pencils. Use heavier cardstock for markers or paint.

Print at actual size. The patterned cats near the end of the set hold up well on cardstock with fine markers.

Coloring a cat that looks soft

Fill the body first with one light color, then add stripes or spots in a darker shade of the same color rather than a different color altogether. A tiny white gap left around the eyes makes the face read as bright and awake. For the sleeping cats, a pale pink inside the ears and on the nose is enough detail.

The first five designs work for preschool and kindergarten. The middle of the set (cats on sills, under tables, and in baskets) is the sweet spot for elementary students. The last three, with a full room or a patterned blanket, are the ones adults tend to pick.
