How to print these pages

  1. Pick the paper size that matches what is in your printer: US Letter or A4.
  2. Open the PDF and choose Print. Set scale to 100 percent or “actual size” (not “fit to page”).
  3. Plain copy paper works for crayons and pencils. Use heavier cardstock for markers or paint.

Print at actual size. The feather-pattern parrot near the end is the most detailed page on this site so far; use cardstock and fine-tip pens.

Feathers without the fuss

On the simpler pages, color the body one flat color and the wing a slightly darker shade, and the bird already looks right. On the detailed pages, follow the feather lines from the head down toward the tail; the drawing does the shading work for you. Beaks and feet are usually gray or pale orange.

Learning the real birds

Budgies are small with striped heads, cockatiels have a crest and orange cheek patches, canaries are mostly yellow, and lovebirds have a peach face on a green body. The pages are drawn true to those shapes, so they double as a simple field guide for the birds a child might meet at a pet shop or a friend's house.
