A hamster is basically a circle with ears, which makes it one of the easiest animals for a small child to color and one of the most fun to give a personality. This set opens with two very simple hamsters, then adds the things hamster owners know well: stuffed cheeks, a running wheel, a tunnel, a food bowl piled with seeds, and a cage with all its furniture.

How to print these pages

  1. Pick the paper size that matches what is in your printer: US Letter or A4.
  2. Open the PDF and choose Print. Set scale to 100 percent or “actual size” (not “fit to page”).
  3. Plain copy paper works for crayons and pencils. Use heavier cardstock for markers or paint.

Print at actual size. The cage and tunnel scenes have many small areas, so colored pencils work better than crayons on those.

Colors that look right

Golden brown with a white belly is the classic hamster, but gray, cream, and black-and-white patches are all real. Keep the ears and paws a little pinker than the body. On the cage pages, coloring the bedding a light yellow and the wheel a bright color makes the hamster stand out.

Ideas for the cage page

The empty-cage page is meant to be planned before it is colored. Where does the wheel go? Where does the hamster sleep? Children who keep a hamster at home usually have strong opinions, and the page becomes a drawing of their own pet's home.
